Welcome to the new episode of monthly Chaichefang, this time we will deconstruct 2 models of joint venture and an independent model. They are Buick Lacrosse, with a configuration of 2013-year 2.4LSIDI Elite and Comfort type , pricing 259,900 yuan yet 225,900 yuan when it is picked up (hereinafter referred to as Lacrosse ); FAW-VW CC, with a configuration of 2013-year 1.8TSI luxurious type, pricing 268,800 yuan yet 239,800 yuan when picked up (hereinafter referred to as CC); Bestern’s B70, with a configuration of 2012-year 1.8AT luxurious type, pricing 141,800 yuan yet 121,800 yuan when it is picked up (hereinafter referred to as B70). Although Roewe 950 and Mazda 6, sharing the same platforms with Lacrosse and B70 respectively, have been deconstructed, it doesn’t mean they have the same workmanship and materials. Besides, is the internal design of CC just as good as its external design that won it the reputation of ‘the most beautiful car in Volkswagen family’? We’ll answer you right now.
The protective structure of the front body

Straightforwardly, the front bumper of Lacrosse is made of shell, polyethylene foam buffer layer, metal bar with energy absorbing box and non-metal pedestrian protection bumper beam. Metal bar and energy absorbing box, fixed with bolt, is aluminum alloy. To lose weight further, Lacrosse use aluminum alloy for engine hood as well. When crash happens, non-metal pedestrian protection beam can change the track of collision.
There is an elegant design inside bumper shell of Lacrosse: active shutter. This device can monitor air inflow actively according to temperature and speed of engine. This smart design can also be seen on Fox cars, but they are not identical. The similarity is the purpose of monitoring air inflow, while Fox use the passive mode. When it rises up to a certain speed, the shutter will be opened by the air to increase air inflow. The active shutter of Lacrosse connects to electric motor to switch, which is more complicated.
Aluminum alloy hood
Lacrosse chose to use aluminum alloy hood for its low weight, same style with Malibu, Regal, and Roewe 950. Data proves that 60% fuel is consumed by fixed weight of a car itself. If the fixed weight of a car is reduced by 10%, the fuel will be lowered by 6%-8% correspondingly. Maybe because of this reason, many cars replaced original common steel with aluminum alloy on their important components. Under achieving the same mechanics performance index, Aluminum alloy is 47% lighter than steel.
The front bumper of CC is made of shell, polyethylene foam buffer and metal bar with energy absorbing box. The metal bar is made of steel, which is able to protect 80% area the car in width. For crumple oriented need, guide groove is designed in energy absorbing box. The last FAW-VW CC scored 13.43 points in head-on collision test of C-NCAP. In the test, the dummy was wounded in chest and legs. And it scored 15.34 points in frontal offset crash test with a dummy wounded in chest. From CC, it’s not hard to find the modular design philosophy of Volkswagens that its front bumper shape and the way of connection are identical to Magotan’s and Sagitar’s. The only difference exists in the pedestrian protection beam in front bumper. Some of them have, others don’t.
The front bumper of B70 is made of bumper shell, foam buffer and metal bar with energy absorbing box. Energy absorbing box and vertical part of bumper metal bar are fixed together with spot welding, which can be taken apart . B70 and Mazda 6 have the entirely same design structure: radiator mounting is fixed at the middle of bumper metal bar which caused shaking during deconstructing. But, compared with Mazda 6, B70 added polyethylene foam in bumper to lower collision force at low speed.
Brief summary: FAW-VW CC and B70 have the same front bumper design: bumper shell, polyethylene foam buffer and metal bar with energy absorbing box. But, Lacrosse also owns non-metal protection bumper beam, which provides a good protection to pedestrians. Additionally, it uses aluminum alloy in making energy absorbing box, which is lighter and better.
